Mayor Landrieu Bans the Box!!
Yes this is my blog but I never realized just how connected I was to the jail and crime situation in New Orleans until I found this story. It really excites me when my mayor connects to my big issues. Haven’t had much use for the mayor recently as his decisions didn’t connect with me.
But now I am so the mayor’s man. Here is to YOU, Mayor Mitch Landrieu for working hard to help those mixed up in the lowest rung of our society- jail. He has set up a multi pronged programs to help the recently released from the pokey people.
Our mayor banned the box! It’s mostly a symbolic move for potential city workers, as they must pass a criminal background check but symbolism counts in a city where the fleur de lis means more to New Orleanians than words can ever express.
Banning the box means that on New Orleans civil service job applications there is no more box that you have to check it if you have a prior felony conviction. Hopefully, other business and corporations in town will follow the mayor strong example here.
There’s another big story here, the Mayor announced the city will be receiving $600,000 in federal aid to strengthen local programs that reduce recidivism, eventually lowering the crime rate by employing ex-prisoners.
