Today was a very surprising day in Court for the case I’m following. All morning the Judge tried to move the case forward, but the prosecution wasn’t ready. Finally, the Judge orders the case to trial, apparently to force the prosecutors’ hand. Didn’t work, instead the six member jury was selected, and the defendant was ordered home to produce his witnesses and other documents pertaining to the case. By the time he returned to Court, the Judge had moved the trial to Wednesday morning.
I’m not sure the Judge did a good thing here. His reasons for rushing to trial were clear- he was unhappy with how long this case has been open, and he wanted the prosecution to make a deal. Nevertheless, ordering a trial with no advance warning isn’t fair to either side.
