One of the only joys for inmates with access to a little money is the store. The store sells basic clothing supplies like underwear, socks, and slippers. It sells junk food like cookies, chips and candy. Inmates depend on this food to spice up their very bland meals. Some inmates crumble up potato chips and add them to the baloney sandwiches. The store is fairly expensive, and you can order one or two times a week. Inmates pay for the store purchases through their accounts. Someone on the outside must put money in the inmate’s account, which is tied to his folder number.
There’s very little reading material in the House of Detention, and the store doesn’t sell any. There’s always a couple of Jesus books floating around, and a couple of romance novels. Those that like to read devour any and all reading material.
